What is PSHE?

PSHE stands for Personal, Social, Health Education.

What is RSHE?

RSHE is part of PSHE. It stands for Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education.

How do we teach RSHE at Lambs Lane Primary School?

Lambs Lane uses the Jigsaw scheme of work to teach RSHE. Additional resources, such as products for menstruation, are included in lessons where appropriate.

Why are pupils in KS1 taught the proper terms for their private body parts?

This is a safeguarding decision based on research and government advice.

What happens if a pupil asks a question about something that wasn’t covered in the lesson?

All questions are answered to an age-appropriate level. If a question would be inappropriate to answer (for example, because of its mature or explicit nature), the child who asked will be encouraged to ask their parents or carers at home.
Questions will not be answered to the child or class if the content is not part of that year group’s program of learning.

Relationships and health education are statutory: pupils cannot be withdrawn from these lessons.

*Sexual reproduction is taught as part of the science curriculum in year 5, during the second part of the summer term. This is statutory: pupils cannot be withdrawn from this lesson.

RSHE is taught during the second half of the summer term. The Jigsaw module is called ‘Changing Me’.

Conception is taught as part of the year 5 science module ‘Living things and their habitats’. Where conception is mentioned in the overview below (for years 4 and 5), that lesson will not be taught.
